The Origins,
The Semper Augustus emerged during a deeply transitional period in my life.
I was living alone for the first time, in a small loft cabin in the Perth Hills.
With COVID lockdown soon following, the days became deeply quiet and spacious.
Solitude settled in gently and with it came a kind of active listening… to the landscape, to time, to something inward and unnamed. Life began to feel less directed and more guided, as though I had stepped out of the way and allowed another current to lead.
The art came suddenly and unexpectedly, late one evening. My attention momentarily wavered from the creative happenings around me and with a pen finding my hand, I began to draw.
When I finally looked down, the work was already there. Complete, structured and symbolic, as if it surfaced from the paper itself. Upon completion we sat in silence.
That drawing marked a beginning.
It opened a door into a visual language that has continued to unfold for me ever since.
The work develops through slow, repetitive mark-making, meditative in nature, with lines, dots, and measured geometric forms built patiently by hand.
Circles, axes, and radiating structures appear often, with a suggestion of maps, instruments, or quiet, contemplative architectures of balance. The images draw on archetype and unconscious memory rather than objective reality, inviting stillness rather than explanation.
The Semper Augustus is an ongoing studio practice — grounded in authenticity, fluidity, and the honouring of creativity in it’s most primal expression.
